Lights.com—Kitchen Lighting

Kitchen lighting can be a lot of fun to tackle. Almost any part of the kitchen can be lit, including some areas we wouldn't normally think of to add lights to. Many different types of fixtures can be used when lighting for kitchens. You can also consider choices like under cabinet lighting, recessed lighting, cable lighting, under cabinet lighting, flexible track lighting and others.

There are several types of fixture choices for kitchen lighting needs. Some include pendant lights, sconces, wall mounts, and track lighting. When considering the light sources for your kitchen, you may want to think of why you would want certain areas to be well lit or not. What is the size of your kitchen? Do you spend a lot of time in there? Is it primarily a work area, or is your dining area combined?

Kitchen lighting should be comfortable, and set where you can see what you are doing properly. You want to avoid lighting that may cast shadows in areas where you need to see clearly. For example, a large fixture on the ceiling may not spread the light evenly in a bigger kitchen, and may cause shadows over important areas. You may want to light these areas individually with smaller fixtures.

Areas for Kitchen Lighting
Some individual places you may want to be well lit include over the sink, the cabinets, cutting and chopping area, breakfast bars or nooks, islands, and under the cabinets. Pendant or track lights may work well over nooks, tables or island areas. If the kids do their homework at the table, you will want there to be sufficient light. It is important to incorporate both your lighting needs for tasking and for ambience.
